Yugoslav Memories Day Tour
Our Yugoslav past is often either clouded in misunderstanding or infused with nostalgia for an idealized past. This day tour focuses on the exploration of the local remains of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, an entity which even today is both celebrated and contested by those who lived in it. Journey through the development of Yugoslavia, learn about the Republic from the perspective of one who was raised by its ideals, and understand the lead up to its eventual violent dismantling in 1990s.

We will begin our day in Mostar, traveling north to the city of Jablanica. Here we will visit the Memorial Museum Battle for the Wounded on the Neretva which tells the story of the decisive WWII battle against fascism that occurred on site. From here, we will venture to the beautiful city of Konjic, where will visit Titos’s Bunker. Dating from the Cold War period, the bunker was constructed to protect Tito and his closest cabinet members in the event of a nuclear attack. The construction began in 1953 and was completed in 1979 for a staggering cost of 4.6 billion dollars. Today, the bunker is a time capsule and serves as a unique monument to the recent past.
During our time in Konjic, you will have time to explore, walk the picturesque stone bridge spanning the Neretva, and enjoy refreshment prior to returning to Mostar. Before parting ways, your guide will lead you on a walking tour of Mostar, delving into the last decade of Yugoslavia, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s independence in 1992, the wars which ensued, and finally, to present day…where Yugoslavia remains a strong and ever-present memory in the heads and hearts of the local community.

“Highlight of our trip to Mostar”
“Sevko’s walking tour was the highlight of our trip to Mostar. He is incredibly knowledgable and loves to answer any and all questions about his home. Having grown up in Mostar, Sevko is able to share his personal photographs and stories to bring Mostar’s history to life for those who get the privilege of taking his tour. On top of that you can tell that he is loved by people all over the city as he is stopping to greet friends throughout the tour. His tour lasted 2 hours! The best I have ever taken in a city. On top of that, he helped us in a completely unrelated situation the following day. We asked a lot of him and he had zero hesitation. Do yourself a favor and do not miss this opportunity. Thank you, Sevko!!!!!!”

“Highly recommended for anyone coming to Mostar”
“Absolutely the highlight of our time in Mostar! Sevko was an absolutely fantastic guide. He has an intimate knowledge of Mostar and its history – from ancient times until present day. He was charming and open to questions… Highly recommended for anyone coming to Mostar. You will certainly get a more authentic and informative experience than going with one of the many other tour groups in Mostar. The small size of the tour and the quality of the guide made this the highlight of our entire trip!”
